Overview

ParActin is a patented extract of the herb Andrographis Paniculata, produced by botanical supplement company HP Ingredients. Known as the “king of bitters” in Asia, andrographis has a long history of use in folk medicine for infections and inflammation-related conditions. Its main active components are andrographolides, compounds known to inhibit inflammation and boost the immune system.

As a supplement ingredient, Paractin is mainly used to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis, but it can also be used to support:

  • Joint & bone health
  • Immune system function
  • Muscle health & sports recovery

Compared to generic andrographis extracts, ParActin is standardized to contain 30% andrographolides and two related compounds called 14-deoxyandrographolide and neoandrographolide. In addition, this extract is also backed by medical research that includes human clinical trials.

How does ParActin work?

The active ingredients in ParActin help normalize the body’s inflammatory response, which plays a key role not just in conditions marked by chronic inflammation, but also autoimmunity. More specifically, the andrographolides in ParActin are believed to inhibit the activity of NF-kB and NFAT – two key regulatory pathways of inflammation and immune function. In doing so, it helps alleviate inflammatory or autoimmune conditions ranging from arthritis to Alzheimer’s.

Did you know? Despite being native to India and Southeast Asia, andrographis is a popular over-the-counter cold and flu ingredient in Sweden and other Scandinavian countries.

ParActin Patents

The preparation of ParActin and its use for Alzheimer’s and autoimmune & inflammatory disorders such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, asthma, allergies, and diabetes is backed by a patent (US Patent 8084495).

HP Ingredients – the maker of ParActin – is also known for selling Bergamonte, a bergamot orange extract used for improving glucose levels and cardiovascular health.

ParActin Nutritional Supplement Uses

Because inflammation is involved in a wide range of health disorders – ranging from Alzheimer’s to autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis – ParActin has the potential to be used in many different supplements. Most commonly, however, it is used in:

Joint Health Supplements

ParActin’s most popular use is as a joint health ingredient, largely because its only human studies showed improvement of arthritis. In this context, the extract can be sold either as a standalone supplement or as part of a multi-ingredient formulation.

Immune Supplements

ParActin can also be used in immunity-boosting supplements. This use is backed by a growing volume of clinical research highlighting the efficacy of andrographis in fighting off cold & flu infections, and boosting overall immune system function.

ParActin Advantages

Compared to generic andrographis extracts, ParActin has the advantages of:

  • Clinical research: ParActin is the only branded andrographis extract that has been examined in human clinical studies, showing proof of its anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • Potency: ParActin is known for its high potency because it is standardized to contain at least 30% andrographolides. By contrast, most generic andrographis products contain only 10% of these active compounds.

ParActin Research

Human Research

Human studies have examined ParActin in the context of arthritis, reporting that it alleviates arthritis symptoms and the underlying inflammation.

ParActin (300 mg) appears to improve rheumatoid arthritis

This randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study examined the efficacy of ParActin in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A total of 60 people with RA were given placebo or paractin tablets (100 mg) 3 times a day for 14 weeks. The treatment group experienced decreases in joint pain, tender joints, swollen joints, and improvements in quality of life and arthritis questionnaires. These changes were accompanied by reductions of inflammatory markers of RA such as IgA and C4.

  • The researchers concluded that “…A. paniculata could be a useful “natural complement” in the treatment of RA.” 1

ParActin seems to alleviate different forms of arthritis

In this small study, six people with different types of arthritis – rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis – were given ParActin tablets daily for 2 years. They experienced a reduction in arthritis symptoms and markers of inflammation.

  • The researchers concluded that “…this product is well tolerated, safe and efficacious for the symptomatic relief and serological control of underlying inflammation…” 2

In addition to human research, numerous cell culture and animal studies have examined the benefits and mechanisms behind ParActin. These examinations suggest that ParActin:

  • Wards off osteoporosis
  • Promotes healthy immune function
  • Alleviates Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline
  • Supports muscle health by reducing muscle damage, inflammation, and pain, and improving performance, particularly in the context of exercise

ParActin Dosage

  • In standalone products, capsules doses of 150 mg are typically used
  • Multi-ingredient formulas provide doses of 25 – 50 mg
  • The only dosage backed by clinical research is 300 mg daily, taken in 2-3 doses

Supplements in Review Recommendation

  • ParActin® 300 – 600 mg daily.

ParActin is a branded, researched, high-potency andrographis extract. ParActin has research-proven, patented benefits for joint health, and may also help with other forms of inflammation and immune system function.

The most common dosage is 300 mg. Research suggests that 300 mg is sufficient, but dosages of up to 600 mg can be taken.
